I need to buy tires for my Coleman Sedona tent trailer. Currently, the trailer has its second set of crappy !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! tires that have gone from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back and have the terrible uneven wear to show for it. Upgrading to radials.

There are two choices, and the Carlisle clearly has a margin over the SuperCargo on paper , but according to the numbers, the SuperCargo would be plenty adequate and is $75 cheaper for a set of three tires. (Also need a spare.)

Anybody want to offer some thoughts on this?

My only thought is that I went through 3 of those crappy loadstar tires on my cargo trailer during my FL->OR move. They cup like crazy!

I bought the carlisle, no regrets. Make sure you have your trailer aligned though. HUGE difference for us.

Kinja'd!!!

Axle thrust angle is the #1 killer of trailer tires.  Besides badgers.

Well, if I had a toaster oven for a trailer, I might consider that.

It’s 91L (1300 lbs, 75 mph) versus 96M (1550 lbs, 81 mph) and occasional use. You recommended the Carlisle to me a year ago. $75 difference for the set of three is not insignificant... We tow at 70mph when we’re outside of California.

The Carlisle would definitely provide a healthy margin over what’s needed.

yeah, I needed both the load and the speed rating here.

So if I towed 9,000 miles on Loadstars without any mishap or fail, then those less-expensive SuperCargo tires ought to be a nice upgrade and sufficient for my needs, no?

Those trailer radials indicate a max pressure of 50 psi. What pressure would you run?

I can’t give you any advice, though I do have a question:

Why don’t trailers use regular passenger car tires? Is the weight rating that much more?

I run full pressure, because thats the pressure they are load rated at

yes. its like trying to find an NA miata tire size with a Load range d or E truck tire.  Remember, half the tires for their weight.

My understanding is that it’s about stronger sidewalls for trailers.

Counterpoint: $75 is not that significant of a price difference.  That’s like one tank of gas these days.

Mine’s a single axle... Do they have an alignment machine that’s peculiar to trailers?

mine is as well.  I took mine to a place that does heavy equipment like trucks and ambulances. Mine was out a full 3 inches which you couldn’t see with your eyes but the guy asked “have you been burning through tires?” yeah.  I’ve put a couple thousand on the carlisles since with almost no wear to speak of.

Thank you for the tip. I’ll check into it. I wish I’d had this conversation before I towed it from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back. Twice...

Instead o f P or LT, they use ST-Metric ratings. They are generally known to have stronger sidewalls versus a radial tire, which helps in trailer applications. You also have access to higher load ratings and higher air pressures, which is often required.

I’ve not used the supercargo tires, but I’ve used other cheap Chinese trailer tires at times in the past. They’re not as terrible as you might imagine, but they’re also not great. They are, however, cheap enough to not really care when one comes apart. I wouldn’t use them on a big mile trailer, or one that I was loading up to the axle limits, but I wouldn’t hesitate to put them on an occasional use trailer.

The thing about trailer tires is that they’re all very cheaply built carcasses, but with otherwise high load ratings for the size. Over the years, I’ve had as many name brand trailer tires come apart as cheap Chinese trailer tires. Sometimes that was function of age ( as I’ve never had a trailer tire even come remotely close wearing out in terms of treadwear), and sometimes it was just a shitty new  tire coming apart at 80mph . When the option presents in bigger sizes, I’ll always go for light truck tires when you can get them in a high enough load rating for the size.

They make for awful trailer tyres...

These came stock on my mother's camper. They are fat, noisy and don't wear well. And they don't help much off road.

We put the Carisle Radial Trail on ours in a st205/75R14. They hold air well, go down the road well and didnt lock up easily in the rain with the trailer brakes. I mounted and balanced them on a road force ma fine and they didn’t need much weight. Went up a load range as well. I would recommend them again. They had great reviews

No t sure of your exact weight but most trailer manufactures max out the tires they put under them and don’t leave much actual room for the stuff you put in them. The m speed rating gets you more speed overhead and the 96 load gets you more of a buffer on weight.

Replaced an old set of bias ply loadstars that were dry rotted and the tread was bulged in the center.
